We are excited to announce, that Russia Cruise Company Vodohod will be offering a new level of service aboard MS "Alexander Pushkin". Motorship «Alexander Pushkin» is a comfortable four-deck vessel. Built in Austria and renovated in 2011, the modern ship is equipped with modern navigational facilities and exceeds the speed of 22 km per hour (around 15 MpH). MS Alexander Pushkin will sail the most popular route in Russia, that links the great imperial cities of the czars. Russia's two most famous cities are also the repositories of Russian art and architecture. Moscow, the medieval and 20th-century capital, has a wonderful heritage of historic buildings, while St. Petersburg, the creation of Peter the Great, benefited from the inspiration of Europe's greatest 18th-century architects and craftsmen. MS Alexander Pushkin was named after one of Russia's greatest poets. During the cruise, you will spend several days in Saint-Petersburg and get a chance to visit destinations, associated with his name, including Tsarskoe Selo and Pushkin museum. Tsarskoe Selo was renamed Pushkin, in honor of Alexander Pushkin, who studied in the lycee here from 1811 to 1817. The town has now gone back to its old name Tsarskoe Selo, meaning Tsar's Village. Situated approximately fifteen miles south of Saint-Petersburg, it has grown since Pushkin's time into a sprawling town with many wooden dachas built around its outskirts, but it is still a very popular summer destination. Its main attraction for visitors is the magnificent turquoise and gold Catherine's Palace, the creation of successive rulers and architects. Indeed, because of the links with Pushkin and the so-called Golden age of Russian poetry, which he initiated here, Tsarskoe Selo has traditionally been seen by writers as the "town of the muse". Pushkin museum is the largest and most visited literary museum in Saint-Petersburg. It was Alexander Pushkin's last residence, and was where he died in 1837 after he was wounded in a duel. After Pushkin was brought home after the duel, he lay dying for two days. During this time he received crowds of visitors who came to pay their last respects. People taking carriages on the streets had no need to give the address of their destination, the two words "To Pushkin" being sufficient to bring them to his door. He died on 29th February 1837. The popularity of the museum reflects the poet's almost godlike status in Russia and it is a shrine to the poet. Discover Russia during the classic river cruises aboard MS Pushkin, that will give you the perfect blend of small town charm and natural pristine beauty, unique cultural experience and visits to the historic sites of the ancient Russian cities. |
